The Get FIT (Families in Training) program is a preventive program aimed at averting Type II diabetes, obesity and sedentary lifestyles for school-aged children and their families. The program is offered throughout the academic year at various school districts, and in the summer as a one-month youth summer camp. Get FIT integrates nutrition, physical fitness and character education to not only support the physical needs of students and their families, but also facilitate the healing of the mind, body and spirit. Get FIT's goal is to transform the lives of people in medically underserved, rural communities. The program focuses on actively engaging community members and stakeholders in the planning, designing and delivery of services and programs that meet the unmet needs of their community. Get FIT is currently offered in Batesville, Cotulla, San Antonio, Santa Rosa, and Uvalde. Enrollment is free and open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are interested in bringing Get FIT to your school, or finding a program near you, call the Get FIT manager at 1-800-959-6673.
