Get Strong with Mayor Ron is spearheaded by the Mayor’s Fitness Council in conjunction with San Antonio Parks and Recreation and the Mayor’s Office. The mission of the Mayor’s Fitness Council is to lead San Antonio to be one of the healthiest and most active communities in the nation which residents, groups, and organizations work collaboratively to achieve targeted health and fitness goals.

Since 2017, Get Strong with Mayor Ron events have taken place across San Antonio in nearly all of the City Council Districts with the goal of shedding light on health and wellness initiatives and elevating fitness and nutrition programs throughout the city. At each Get Strong event Mayor Nirenberg interacts with participants for a fun, physical, or hands-on wellness activity.

The San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department is an integral part of the Get Strong series, providing support through venues, instructors, and popular classes that showcase the Mayor setting a healthy example.

Four times each year, in partnership with the Christian Medical and Dental Association, we host an 8-hour Health and Wellness Day where individuals can receive free dental and medical care.

Most dental procedures are offered, from X-rays and exams to restorative procedures and oral surgery.

Medical care normally includes pain management, HIV/AIDS testing, immunizations, women's health, and health education.

Our primary target is the chronically homeless individual without care, but we also serve the situationally homeless and under-served populations as space allows.

We combat the issues of childhood obesity and physical inactivity by helping youth develop healthy lifestyles through free nutrition education, wholesome snacks, and necessary sustenance each day. Through daily exercise we promote moderate to vigorous physical activity. In addition, SA Youth promotes healthy living by advising against the use of negative behaviors such as smoking, consuming alcohol, and abusing drugs

COMPREHENSIVE NUTRITION

One in four children in San Antonio suffers from food insecurity and hunger. We serve our youth with a healthy snack upon arriving at our centers after they finish the school day. Children who remain through dinner are also served a nutritious meal. Throughout the summer months, children are served a healthy breakfast along with a nutritious lunch. Our program provides wholesome sustenance and well-planned menu options designed by a Nutrition Coordinator at our site locations.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

SA Fit! provides our youth with hands-on, creative, and fun activities that are moderate to vigorous physical activities. Each day our youth engage in at least 60 minutes of structured physical activities at our site locations. Using GeoMotion and SPARK (Sports, Play, & Active Recreation for Kids) our youth are equipped with the tools to make healthy lifestyle choices. We also offer specialized physical fitness programs in:

  • Dance
  • Swimming
  • Cheerleading and tumbling
  • Rock-climbing
