As a program of Mission Road Developmental Center, Unicorn Center provides appropriate vocational and social activities to both residents of Mission Road community homes and those living elsewhere.

Mission Road Developmental Center’s Community Employment & Job Coaching Program helps match adults with IDD and employers who are eager to have them on their team.

Our peer support group, which meets twice a month, provides an upbeat place for individuals with spinal cord injuries and their caregivers to connect with other people who have experienced the same life-changing injury.

The meetings are an excellent way for members to share resources, ideas, and information while enjoying fellowship in a relaxed setting.

In addition to guest speakers and discussions on topics of interest, meetings also include quarterly social and recreational outings.

Parent 2 Parent mentors guide and support new parents as they journey through life having a child with Down syndrome.

We need couples and single parents (dads are requested, too!) The requirements are:

• parent to a child 3 years or older
• pass a background check

• 1-year commitment

The Education Director will be doing the presentation, sharing resources, reviewing the DSASTX programs, and providing you with all the tools you need to be a parent mentor.

The Adult Continuing Education (ACE) program offers tutoring for adults with Down syndrome in the areas of reading, math, and writing.

Tutoring is available for those who are 18 years and older and is offered once a week for 90 minutes.

All lessons are individualized to the level of each student. Each student gets his/her own academic binder with lessons chosen specifically for his/her abilities. This is an ideal one-on-one tutoring situation where the student receives individualized attention.

The process is simple. If a student is interested in participating in this program, an application is completed followed by an informal assessment performed by the director. This information is used to develop the academic lessons.

Students and tutors are matched based on personalities and availability of tutoring times. All lessons are created by the director.

Reaction to this program is outstanding. Real friendships have developed with these tutoring sessions. The tutor learns from the student, as well as the student learning from the tutor. The academics are a plus for our students! The friendships are even better!

Volunteers are asked to complete an application and participate in an orientation.
