APS investigates abuse, neglect, and exploitation of adults who are elderly or have disabilities and who live in the community. Any adult who has a disability or who is age 65 or older that is in a state of abuse, neglect, or exploitation may be eligible to receive adult protective services.

Victims of abuse, neglect, or exploitation may get short-term help with shelter, home repairs, food, transportation, managing money, medical care, home healthcare services, and mental health services.

Step One – A young person enters a Safe Place and asks for help.

Step Two – The site employee finds a comfortable place for the youth to wait while they call the licensed Safe Place agency. For the greater San Antonio area that is Roy Maas Youth Alternatives (RMYA).

Step Three – An RMYA staff member will talk with the youth to get more information and explain that an SAPD officer can escort them to the RMYA Bridge Emergency shelter.  If the child is agreeable, the RMYA staff will contact SAPD to transport the youth to the shelter. 

Step Four – Once at the Bridge, direct-care staff and counselors meet with the youth and provide support. Agency staff ensures the youth and their families receive the help and professional services they need.

This program is for youth under the age of 18 in need of immediate help and safety.

We offer the following services:

  • Kym's Kupboard: providing food for families in crisis. The pantry is available to seniors once a week and families twice a month. We also offer snack bags to children on seasonal breaks from school.
  • Lillie's Legacy: clothing and accessories are available for the whole family. Services are available once a month to families.
  • Jovonies' Hugs: clothing, diapers, wipes, formula, and baby furnishings for infants, toddlers, and preschool-age children. Parents can receive supplies twice a month and diapers once a month.
  • Empowerment Services: support, counseling, and resources to women and children who have experienced trauma through domestic violence, abuse, and bullying. Self-defense classes are offered through Ohana Academy. Providing advocacy to special needs children and adults.
  • Senior Services: Delivered supplies to selected senior living facilities monthly. Providing resources and supplies to seniors weekly at the center.

Victims and survivors of domestic violence receive individual counseling by appointment. Individual counseling focuses on personal safety, personal growth, development, and improving interpersonal relationships. Participation is voluntary and available to residential and non-residential clients.

Children’s counseling provides a variety of therapeutic services suited to meet the developmental and emotional needs of each child. Play therapy, and individual, and group counseling are offered to help children process and heal from domestic violence. Services are provided to every child at the Battered Women and Children’s Shelter, as well as any child needing therapeutic services at our Broadway office.

Our Violence Intervention Program is one of only three State-certified Batterers Intervention Programs in Bexar County, reaching male, female, and LGBTQ perpetrators of domestic violence with a comprehensive curriculum.

The VIP program consists of group therapy for men and women who perpetrate domestic and family violence. VIP curriculum allows perpetrators to take responsibility for their abusive behavior and teaches them the fundamentals of a healthy, non-violent relationship. It is designed to cover different aspects of violence and family abuse.

If you are ready to end your abusive behavior, join one of our groups. The program consists of 20 group sessions that meet on a weekly basis for two hours. If you are interested in joining, please set an appointment.

All service are offered in English and Spanish.

  • Every participant needs to have a personal email and access to a personal computer or smartphone (example: iPhone, Android)
  • Participation in the VIP program is open to the public as well as persons referred by the court, CPS, probation office, or parole office.

Initial evaluation $25. This is a two-hour appointment to complete paperwork and meet one-on-one with a professional counselor.

Group sessions are $25 per session. The total amount of sessions is 20.

Our trained advocates connect clients to resources and services through a continuous, streamlined support process. From shelter and housing to employment and legal assistance, we ensure the needs of survivors and their families are met.

Our advocacy services can be accessed at any point after an incident of sexual violence, from immediate crisis support and hospital accompaniment to navigating legal and judicial systems.

If you or someone you know has been impacted by sexual violence, you can request one of our advocates at any time.

  • Follow-up Medical Care: To monitor health through regular physical exams and/or medical tests by a doctor.
