Training
Individuals coming in contact with survivors of torture find there is an enormous need for training, especially pro-bono professionals.

CST provides training on an ongoing basis, responding to client's and community needs as they arise.  To reduce the waitlist, CST trains mainstream licensed providers whose clientele may include refugees and immigrants, thus helping them identify survivors, improve their skills, and provide strength-based, trauma-informed care.

CST provides education and workshops for refugee community leaders, attorneys, educators, physicians, and the immigrant community, on an ongoing basis.

Educational opportunities through CST’s social services

Many survivors of torture clients are underemployed. CST’s Adam Patrick Bratcher (APB) Education Program identifies cohorts of clients who want to pursue college or certificates. The program establishes a single point of entry through the highest-level community college contact.  

CST board members’ career-long, national experience in community college leadership eases access to community college programs that lead to jobs with the potential of earning a sustainable wage. This referral system to free college or certification programs, as a part of our APB Education Program, has a far-reaching impact on clients, helping them to build employable skills and earn a living, self-sufficiency, cultural competency, English skills, and generates hope for a better future for their family.

Community perception is positive regarding the quality and innovation of CST’s responses to clients’ challenges.

CST provides wraparound services, which have been a best practice for many decades, and treat the whole client in the context of being an individual, a member of a family, a part of a culture and a survivor of repeated trauma, in a culturally competent manner.

Our Heart & Sole middle school program meets the unique needs of girls of all abilities in 6th-8th grade. The program considers the whole person - body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection. Heart & Sole offers an inclusive place of belonging, where girls feel supported and inspired to explore their emotions, cultivate empathy and strengthen their physical and emotional health. At the end of the season, all program participants complete a 5K.

Grades 3-5:

Girls on the Run inspires girls of all abilities to recognize their individual strengths, while building a sense of connection in a team setting. At the end of the season, the team completes a 5K together, which provides a tangible sense of accomplishment and sets a confident mindset into motion.

Building industry professionals and educators help high school students learn more about potential careers in architecture, engineering, and construction.

During the program, students work in teams under the mentorship of experienced professionals, who guide them through projects that meet real industry requirements. The result is an opportunity to gain practical insight into what building industry professionals do to transform their ideas from an initial concept into a finished building.

Students also visit professional firms, attend College Night at the University of Texas at San Antonio CACP, and attend lectures on industry topics.

At the conclusion of the program year, students present their design solutions and receive feedback from local industry leaders.

In addition, every qualified senior who goes on to university study in a building industry-related field is eligible for a local scholarship.

Texas ACE 21st Century, provided through Harlandale ISD, is a Texas Education Agency (TEA) grant-funded program that provides after-school academic support, college & workforce readiness, and family engagement opportunities for students who qualify (Kinder - 8th grade). ACE provides expanded learning opportunities for students and their families and offers innovative, hands-on activities that reinforce and align with the students’ regular academic curriculum. ACE strives to improve students’ academic performance, school day attendance, college & career readiness, and promotion rates.

The SA Hope Center program connects individuals and families with Social Workers, whom we call Mentors, to work together and address the root cause(s) of chronic poverty.

Mentors team with the program participants to create personalized goals that increase physical, emotional, and spiritual health by focusing on each person's unique strengths.

When empowering each individual through our programs, they begin positive steps towards achieving their goals of financial literacy, strengthening the family unit, career readiness, adult education, and overall wellness.

This program is for students at Hot Wells Middle School.

This program provides summer opportunities for youth-interns to develop competence and confidence as well as workplace skills in one of the top career oriented positions in the industry today. Interns will be exposed to career awareness and exploration while developing their career plans and a commitment to lifelong learning.

Interns will interact with positive, successful adult role models to provide guidance in setting and achieving goals. This program will help interns develop good work habits, build job skills, build confidence and self-worth, and strengthen communication skills.

Youth between the ages 14-17 who attend:

• Harlandale ISD
• Northside ISD
• San Antonio ISD
• South San ISD
• Southside ISD
• Southwest ISD

Note: Youth must not turn 18 between program dates of: June-July.

NOTE: Application, ID and Utility Bill must have same address or application will not be accepted.

Interns are placed and monitored at assigned work sites and are expected to work 20 hours a week for a six week period. Interns are paid a stipend of $7.25 an hour.

This program works with all children regardless of their background to build life skills and healthy habits by sharing Center for Substance Abuse prevention curricula taught in school-based settings and out-of-school time (OST) sites.

Life Skills helps develop and/or strengthen youth’s character development and academic achievement. i.e. self-concept and self-esteem, recognizing and dealing with emotions, dealing with teasing, accepting consequences, and refusing drugs and alcohol.

• Memorandum of Understanding must be in place with school districts during school and out-of-school time.
• Parent/Guardian must sign and complete consent for youth to participate in the group.
• Duration/Length of the group will depend on the curriculum being taught.
• Session/Lesson can last 30 minutes to an hour depending on the curriculum being taught.
• Students are not pulled out of their core classes for groups.

Communities In Schools programs surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Our evidence-based approach, adapted to meet each community’s unique needs, is the basis for our success.

Basic Needs: A student cannot focus in the classroom if he or she is hungry, cold or tired, or cannot see the board. Site coordinators see to it that students' basic needs are met each day.

Enrichment: Our Site coordinators enroll students in a wide variety of after-school and summer programs, field trips and youth conferences to help them gain experience that is essential to meeting college and career goals.

Academic Assistance: Our site coordinators work hard to ensure that students have the resources to progress academically. From providing students with tutors to finding and creating quiet spaces where students can study, we do whatever it takes to create an optimal learning environment for our students.

Life Skills: Through one-on-one workshops, team building, and guest speakers, we work with students to develop social-emotional learning, character education, social skills building, and conflict resolution.

Behavioral Interventions: Many of our students face and overcome difficult obstacles in their lives. However, their survival skills aren’t always effective in the classroom or in the workplace. Our program teaches students positive ways to cope with anger, conflict resolution, and other strategies to keep them focused on school.

Family Engagement: Site coordinators connect families with counselors and social workers to make sure that home is a healthy, nurturing environment where a student can feel safe.

This program is for students at Forbes Elementary.
