The BieneStar Adult Healthy Lifestyle Program is an educational-based, behavioral therapy curriculum aimed at preventing diabetes and obesity in adults.
BieneStar’s health educators believe that when clients are educated clients are more likely to make healthier decisions for themselves and their families about:
- nutrition
- physical activity
- other healthy lifestyles
Goal-setting and self-monitoring are two key behavior components of the program.
The BieneStar curriculum can be used in:

Get Strong with Mayor Ron is spearheaded by the Mayor’s Fitness Council in conjunction with San Antonio Parks and Recreation and the Mayor’s Office. The mission of the Mayor’s Fitness Council is to lead San Antonio to be one of the healthiest and most active communities in the nation which residents, groups, and organizations work collaboratively to achieve targeted health and fitness goals.
Since 2017, Get Strong with Mayor Ron events have taken place across San Antonio in nearly all of the City Council Districts with the goal of shedding light on health and wellness initiatives and elevating fitness and nutrition programs throughout the city. At each Get Strong event Mayor Nirenberg interacts with participants for a fun, physical, or hands-on wellness activity.
The San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department is an integral part of the Get Strong series, providing support through venues, instructors, and popular classes that showcase the Mayor setting a healthy example.

The SAISD Community Education program identifies, assesses and promotes the learning needs and interests of the community by building relationships with families and local community businesses. The goal is to create partnerships with families and community members that will increase participation in family enrichment activities.
The program is designed to raise student academic performance, attendance, and retention which strengthen the community and increase opportunities of an improved quality of life. In collaboration with over 45 community partners, SAISD offers free community education classes in the following strands:

- Healthy and Active Lives
- Financial Literacy
- Digital Literacy
- College & Career Exploration to include TSI Prep.
- Community Enrichment and Leadership.
Community member attendance in these classes enhance and upgrade employment skills and provide exposure to resources and support from the community that markedly increase participant self-confidence and advance their education, which allow them to assist their children academically and be a role model for family and friends.

Large studies published in scientific journals have shown that the health programs operated by SAHRC have decreased:
- obesity rates
- waist circumference
- body mass index
- glucose, insulin
- dietary fat intake
- increased dietary fiber intake
- fitness levels in children
Bienestar/NEEMA is Texas Education Agency (TEA)- approved. The curriculum is recognized as a successful strategy by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and as a Research-Tested Intervention Program by the National Cancer Institute.

The Social and Health Research Center (SAHRC) is certified to teach the National DPP. This program was created to address the increasing number of individuals developing prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Additionally, the National DDP has created a partnership between the SAHRC and the CDC offering evidence-based, cost-effective interventions that help people live healthier lives and prevent type 2 diabetes.
The SAHRC offers this adult Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-recognized lifestyle change program as part of their chronic disease prevention that focuses on:
- healthy eating
- physical activity
- prevention of obesity
- diabetes
- cardiovascular disease
Evidence shows that people with prediabetes who take part in a structured lifestyle change program can cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58% (71% for people over 60 years old).”

Four times each year, in partnership with the Christian Medical and Dental Association, we host an 8-hour Health and Wellness Day where individuals can receive free dental and medical care.
Most dental procedures are offered, from X-rays and exams to restorative procedures and oral surgery.
Medical care normally includes pain management, HIV/AIDS testing, immunizations, women's health, and health education.
Our primary target is the chronically homeless individual without care, but we also serve the situationally homeless and under-served populations as space allows.

Community Health Workers, or Promotores de Salud, increase wellness by reaching out to, connecting with, and engaging underserved families and communities to help improve health outcomes for themselves, their families, and the communities in which they live.
Methodist Healthcare Ministries' Community Health Workers are certified by the Texas Department of State Health (DSHS).
Services include:
- Establishing positive, trusting relationships with community residents in or from underserved communities.
- Helping patients/clients, families, and underserved communities overcome barriers in language and culture to better connect to quality healthcare services and resources.
- Connecting underserved populations to health care services and resources.
- Providing informal counseling, support, and follow-up home visits for patients/clients.
- Assist in making and maintaining community partnerships, collaborations, programs, and services.
Herbal wisdom, integrative health and nutrition, and Western medicine.

Bexar County Reflejo Court
The Reflejo Court targets the domestic violence offender with the intent to reduce recidivism
among this population through intense supervision by a multi-disciplinary team that includes a prosecutor, public defender, coordinator, case manager, treatment provider, and law enforcement led by Judge Rosie Speedlin Gonzalez. Each practitioner in the team provides a necessary service to the violent offender to address the core issues that lead to the violence.
Reflejo Court addresses:
- substance abuse disorders
- mental health, trauma
- other ancillary needs that fuel domestic violence

The age requirement for our Head Start Prekindergarten Program is three years old on or before September 1.
Head Start is a federally funded program provided at no cost for qualifying families.
