Understanding Foster Care

When children can’t safely live at home, the court can give temporary legal possession to Child Protective Services (CPS). CPS assigns a case worker to the children and then the immediate goal is to find a safe home for the children to live while the biological parents work to get their rights back.

These temporary places could be:

  • Foster family homes
  • Residential group care facilities
  • Facilities overseen by another state agency

Foster care is meant to be temporary until the parents demonstrate they can safely care for their children. However, it can become permanent if the court determines parental rights should be terminated and the children become legally free for adoption.

Foster parents are typically the natural choice for the permanency provided through adoption. But it's an uncertain road that you must be prepared to travel.

1HOPE is Ready to Help

We see the need and we will partner with you to answer the call. Through 1HOPE’s training and verification of families, we can place children in your safe, loving home. Knowing that God “sets the lonely into families” (Psalm 68:6), 1HOPE feels called to provide foster care services to kids in crisis by:

  • Recruiting, training, and verifying foster families
  • Facilitating excellent matches of children and families
  • Providing continuing education and support for foster families
  • Helping develop care communities to support each 1HOPE foster family
  • Assisting area churches in developing Foster/Adopt Ministries

Missional Opportunity

Foster families are, in effect, local missionaries. By accepting a child into their home, they also open their door to caseworkers, CASA volunteers, birth families, therapy team members, school teachers, medical professionals, and others.

They have the opportunity to share the tangible love of Christ in hurting places. By ministering as foster/adopt families, you are contributing to the sharing of the gospel of Jesus Christ -- the one HOPE of the world!

“My heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved”
                                    ~ Romans 10:1

Here at MOPS, we gather and support moms. We believe in the simple but revolutionary idea that remarkable things happen when moms come together, face to face. That’s why we rally women to come together in their own neighborhoods and help each other through this thing called motherhood, one gathering at a time.

All MOPS groups aim to provide mothers of young children with a support team of other women from the same geographic location through which they can develop friendships, openly and honestly discuss parenting challenges and techniques, gain insight and inspiration from guest speakers, strengthen their faith as Christians, and frankly, catch a break from motherhood, at least for a few hours each month.

What can you gain from joining MOPS?

  • Develop friendships.
  • Compare experiences.
  • Learn new parenting skills.
  • Take a break.
  • Get involved through service.
  • Strengthen faith.

All moms of children ages newborn through Kindergarten can join MOPS. While MOPS welcomes mothers of all faiths, it is a Christian organization, so it wouldn’t be ideal for those who might feel uncomfortable around prayer and related themes. It is intended for those looking to find a support system of other moms while strengthening their faith in Christ. According to the Web site, “MOPS International exists to equip and develop every mother of preschoolers to realize her potential as a woman, mother, and leader in the name of Jesus Christ.”

Membership fees vary depending on the group. However, as a basic guideline, the annual dues for MOPS typically range from about $75-$130.

Parent involvement is the cornerstone of every child’s success. But without the right knowledge and tools, parents might not realize all the opportunities they can help provide to their children to set them up for a successful future. At Brighton, we provide an array of educational sessions that teach parents about the importance of their child’s environment, how to engage in appropriate discipline, effective communication strategies, and how to work with the educational system to ensure your child’s educational needs are being met.

What makes Brighton Center different? Brighton offers a variety of workshops to make the parent the expert – our job is not to advocate for parents but to assist parents in becoming the best advocates for their children. One-of-a-kind program in San Antonio—no one else is doing it.

RBH believes that many issues are best addressed within the context of improving the family system. Often patterns of communication difficulties or poor conflict resolution strategies complicate presenting symptoms for an individual within the family. Many families today are facing significant stress, with numerous obligations and activities. Juggling responsibilities of both work and family life, many parents are stretched too thin. Time within the family is often limited to time in the car, going to school or sports activities, or doing homework.

RBH Family Systems Therapy works to help restore a healthy balance within the family in which all members can support and empathize with one another. Parenting strategies are offered to optimize communication, discipline, behavior modification, and expressions of love and support. Family Therapy is also ideal to help solve marital conflict and tension within a family system.

Our newest program CARE connects families with a certified parent educator that provides the support they need to move from surviving to thriving. CARE is a free program that is designed to assist parents through mentoring, support and education. CARE will help provide a positive support system, will teach problem solving skills, connect you with resources and much more! We believe supporting healthy families builds a healthy community.

Family Well-Being: PAT educators believe anyone that is anyone that is important to your child is important to us. We work hard to support families and promote healthy family relationships.

Development-Centered Parenting: When parents are familiar with their child’s developmental milestones, they are more likely to have appropriate expectations in regard to their child’s behaviors, actions and reactions. PAT educators are trained experts in developmental milestones from birth to kindergarten!

Positive Parent Child Interaction: During each home visit, a parent-child activity will take place that encourages positive parent-child interaction AND facilities learning. Because a child’s brain grows the fastest the first 5 years of life, consistent and positive engagement is key!

Any family with a child of any age.
