The Health and Wholeness Center, a ministry of the Benedictine Sisters of Boerne, opened in 1990. It serves as an ecumenical “home away from home” for individuals ages 50 and older. Its overall purpose is to address the needs of the whole person by providing programs designed to enhance the wellness of body, mind, and spirit.

The success of the Health and Wholeness Center is due in part to its philosophy for volunteerism which embraces a theme of “Seniors Serving Seniors”. Nearly 30 members volunteer throughout the year at the Health and Wholeness Center in various capacities including program leadership, and grounds beautification.

The Center offers activities Monday thru Friday including water exercise classes and lap swimming in an enclosed, Jr. Olympic size pool with regulated temperatures.

The Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) provides assistance to low-income households particularly the elderly and homes with young children to conserve energy and reduce high utility bills to assist in becoming more self-sufficient.

Weatherization utilizes cost-effective, energy efficient improvements to the home free of charge while ensuring the heath and safety of people served through a series of sophisticated analyses of individual homes. These analyses take the whole-house approach that encompass the building envelope, its heating and cooling systems, its electrical system, and both gas or electricity consuming appliances.

Because the goal is to reduce energy consumption by making he home more energy-efficient, renovations and cosmetic improvements are not included.

Typical weatherization measures MAY include caulking, weather-stripping windows and doors; patching holes in the building envelope; adding ceiling, wall or floor insulation; sealing an AC duct system; tune-up, repair or replacement of inefficient heating and cooling systems; analyzing gas heating appliances for both efficiency and safety; performing tune-ups, modification or possible replacement; and analyzing indoor air quality to minimize chronic health conditions due to air pollutants.

All of the above items may not apply to every home.

The counties serviced by the Weatherization Program are: Brewster, Dimmit, Crane, Culberson, Edwards, Hudspeth, Jeff Davis, Kinney, LaSalle, Maverick, Pecos, Presidio, Real, Terrell, Uvalde, Val Verde, and Zavala.
