The Youth Development Department of Ella Austin Community Center is a year-round project, composed of two programs: the After School Program and the Summer Enrichment Program.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

The After School Program offers homework assistance to students, aged 6 – 14 years of age (Elementary – Middle School grades). It provides educational and recreational activities, fine arts (art, music, drama, and creative writing), library usage, and a computer lab.

Students are provided with after-school hot meals catered by the San Antonio Food Bank.

Positive self-esteem is promoted through motivational speakers, field trips to college campuses, and the celebration of cultures.

The program tracks the academic development of each student by observing their grade cards and progress reports from their schools. Academic development is a very crucial component of the After School Program and degreed/certified staff offer tutoring to youth in areas where they may be academically deficient. Additionally, recreation, socialization skills, positive self-esteem, and character building are promoted in the program.

Tuition-free scholarships for our Youth Development Programs are available for youth ages 6-15.

SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

The Summer Enrichment Program occurs during the summer months. Youth have a daily schedule that provides time for sports and recreation, board games, problem-solving/brain teaser activities, physical fitness, fine arts (which usually includes a drama or musical production by summer’s end), computer lab, and library usage, a book club, motivational speakers, field trips and career exploration.

Youth are provided with lunch and an afternoon snack each day.

Participants' academic skills are enhanced by practices and drills in subjects of the grade level that they have just completed using the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) curriculum.

STEM PROGRAM

Ella Austin Community Center incorporates Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math into all of its youth programs.

We also offer a year-round Science and Math Academy for qualified eleven- to fifteen-year-olds in partnership with St. Philip’s College, The Center of Excellence for Mathematics, and for Sciences. The academy focuses on fun topics with high-demand careers such as engineering, biotechnology, game design, alternative energy, chemistry, environmental science, and more.

Third-grade reading levels lay a foundation for a successful educational journey. From third grade onwards, sutdents are reading to learn, and literary struggles only compound. Strong reading ability is pivotal to learning and future career goals.

Family Service parent engagement provides free reading tutoring for first, second, and third graders to help them feel confident, pass their exams, and set them up for future success.

Parents volunteer to be reading tutors, which helps them stay engaged in their children's school. The parents are trained by our team members and their school's reading specialists in literacy techniques, games, and curriculum to help students improve their reading skills. Our reading tutors, called Students for Life, help students accelerate their reading skills.

• Project VALOR collaborates with students in their development of academic, social, and marketable skills while enrolled at San Antonio College. Our program provides students with holistic academic support within a learning community of peers.

  The TRiO VSSS program is offered at no cost to students. We provide academic and community support for student veterans studying at San Antonio College.

This program is for students at Poe Middle School.

We want all the children of the neighborhood to succeed in life and in school. To bolster their educational experiences, we offer after-school tutoring and homework help during the school year and a summer reading program in which the children read to an adult and write a short report about each book they read. The children are given $1.00 for each book they complete.

Available to school-age children and youth in and around the East Meadows (formerly Wheatley Courts) area.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of San Antonio changes lives through high-quality afterschool and summer programs in a safe, affordable, and fun environment.

BGCSA serves kids ages 6 to 18 years old.

Clubhouse membership is $100 for the school year and $100 for the summer.

Teen membership is $25 for the summer.

Our HISD extended day programs are on a sliding scale fee and require proof of income to verify household income levels.

Hardship scholarships are readily available; and all military youth or youth on Medicaid Amerigroup are free.

Registration fees are capped at $300 per family.

Refugee School Impact provides after-school tutoring to refugee children to support academic success and promotion to the next grade level.

Academic Assistance: Our site coordinators work hard to ensure that students have the resources to progress academically. From providing students with tutors to finding and creating quiet spaces where students can study, we do whatever it takes to create an optimal learning environment.

Life Skills: Through one-on-one workshops, team building, and guest speakers, we work with students to develop social-emotional learning, character education, social skills building, and conflict resolution.

Behavioral Interventions: Many of our students face and overcome difficult life obstacles. However, their survival skills aren’t always effective in the classroom or the workplace. Our program teaches students positive ways to cope with anger, conflict resolution, and other strategies to keep them focused on school.

Family Engagement: Site coordinators connect families with counselors and social workers to ensure the home is a healthy, nurturing environment where students can feel safe.

This program is for students at De Zavala Elementary School.

Basic Needs: A student cannot focus in the classroom if he or she is hungry, cold, tired, or cannot see the board. Site coordinators see that students' basic needs are met each day.

Enrichment: Our Site coordinators, enroll students in after-school and summer programs, field trips, and youth conferences to help them gain experience essential to meeting college and career goals.

This program is for students at Barkley-Ruiz Elementary.

The primary focus is to help elementary students receive help with their Math homework. When their math homework is complete, they receive help with other subjects.

Free

Through local community centers, volunteer pre-service teachers provide each parent with a comprehensive math education.

These parents then learn how to teach their children math from pre-kindergarten onward.

Sustainability is achieved when the parent-student becomes the parent-educator for their community center.

Parents are empowered to advocate for their children’s education within the home and their schools and promote math within the entire community.
