NAAPIMHA believes advocacy plays a critical role in promoting the mental health and well-being of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders. We know that mental health, particularly in AANHPI communities, continues to be a severely under-resourced area, and as a result, accessing culturally competent services is a challenge our communities face.

If we don't advocate, we don't have a voice to demand resources to support a broader understanding of mental health that includes language-accessible services, culturally relevant practices, and traditional modes of healing. NAAPIMHA is dedicated to advocating for AANHPI communities through policies and actions because we know mental health is something that touches everyone, and in today's world is more important than ever.

GET INVOLVED

There are many opportunities for you to serve in this ministry. All we ask is that you have a willing heart and a spirit of obedience and you can play a crucial role in God's ministry of Changing Hearts, Transforming Lives and Impacting the World.

BE A TEAM MEMBER

Kairos volunteers come from all walks and strata of life. They all share a desire to follow Christ's admonition of Matthew 25:36, "I was in prison and you visited me." If you feel God's call to minister to the incarcerated, to the female family member of someone incarcerated, or as a part of a Kairos team, contact the State Chairperson to inquire about how you can get involved, or contact the KPMI office to find out about qualification and training and to be put in touch with the local Kairos community. Not all team members serve inside correctional institutions. Kairos Outside weekends are usually held at church camps (and similar facilities).

BE A SUPPORT VOLUNTEER

Each Kairos retreat weekend has opportunities for outside support, such as baking cookies, writing letters of support, or preparing meals. Get your church's Sunday school classes to color place mats for mealtime in prison.

BE A COOKIE BAKER

We may need up to 5,000 dozen cookies for a typical Kairos weekend. Do the math... that's 60,000 cookies! Homemade cookies are a tangible expression of Christian love and an indication of God's concern for a group of people who seldom encounter either in the course of their daily lives. Your loving sacrifice will provide "bread" that shines the Light of God's Grace into the darkest corners of a prison unit. May God bless you for the gift of baking!

To volunteer, fill out the form here and Kairos will reach out with opportunities for you.

Listen. Offer Support. Educate. Break the Silence.

Awaaz is an all-volunteer based community service organization. We cannot be effective without the wholehearted effort of every community member. Help us help your community.Volunteers are essential for nonprofits. In a sector where we usually have more work to do than we have staff to do it, volunteers boost our power, lighten the load, and exponentially increase our impact. Best of all, they do it because they believe in the cause and want to help.

Many Ways to Volunteer with AWAAZ:

Volunteer professional services:

  • Survivors of domestic violence are in need of multiple support systems. They need support from professional services like Medical, Legal, Financial and Economic. Professionals in the above areas are always in need, and we will welcome your services - pro bono or for a small fee.

Community Ambassador:

  • If you are interested in our mission, you can help us spread the word about AWAAZ and its mission to the South Asian community as well as other organizations in Bexar County.

Organize events:

  • If you have special organizational skills, are good at motivating people, and can commit to contained bursts of activity - help us in our upcoming events, webinars. And if you would like create your own event supporting Avaaz’s mission

Become a fundraiser:

  • You can work with our Board members to help with fund raising. You can also create your own methodology to reach organizations, corporations, philanthropic organizations to support our mission and request Funds - one time or on a recurring basis. Alternatively, you can also help our committee for donations and fund raising at our events.

Outreach:

  • You can build relationships, do presentations and build awareness in small community gatherings, Universities, colleges and schools, at events in the South Asian community, as well as mainstream communities

Technology:

  • If you are a technical person and interested in social media – you can help spread awareness of Awaaz through social media - Facebook, Instagram, twitter etc.
  • If you are an IT person and interested in managing Data and Data analysis - you can help with creating and manage confidential databases and statistical reports.

Grant Proposals:

  • If you are good in writing and research, you can help our Grant Director research for Grants and write Grant proposals

There are myriad ways of volunteering with us. If you want to just volunteer with us in any area, and have the passion and energy to fulfill our mission, please email us here with the following information:

The Delta Society Pet Partners® program was established in 1990 to ensure that “both ends of the leash,” people as well as animals, are well-prepared to participate in animal-assisted activity and animal-assisted therapy programs.

Pet Partners is the only national registry that requires volunteer training and screening of animal-handler teams.

Potential Pet Partner Teams are required to follow all Pet Partner policies and procedures in order to become registered Pet Partners. Handlers must be able to learn and demonstrate the skills necessary to visit safely with your animal in hospitals, nursing homes, classrooms, and other facilities.

You can do this in two different ways:

1. Attend an 8-hour Pet Partner Team training course when one is available and then be evaluated as a team.
2. Or you can complete an online course through Pet Partners.org and then be evaluated.

Learn more about becoming a registered Pet Partners team by contacting us or check out our Calendar of Events page for upcoming evaluation dates.

Have you ever read to a dog? Dogs like to be read to, even if they have their eyes closed. Research studies have shown that children whose reading scores lag behind their peers suffer from a fear of reading aloud in the classroom.

This program improves children’s reading and communicating skills by employing a powerful method: reading to a dog—but not any dog. Our dogs are registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handlers as a team and go to schools and libraries as reading companions for children.

When a dog is listening, a child’s dread is replaced by eager anticipation and learning occurs. The handler is a skilled facilitator, shifting performance pressure away from the child and providing support.

When children read to dogs the experience is magical—there is no other way to describe it!

Become a Hospice Volunteer – You Belong Here

If you are searching for a way to make a difference in the lives of others, you belong here. Hospice volunteers are a valuable part of our care team. Based on your interests and preferences, receive specific volunteer training to help improve the quality of life for others.

From providing companionship at a patient’s bedside, to running errands, and from assisting with administrative duties to creating gifts for patients and their families, one of our volunteer coordinators will help you discover the best fit for you.

  • Hold a hand, share a story
  • Send a card
  • Listen, read, or sing
  • Make gifts for patients
  • Run errands or perform light housekeeping
  • Share flowers, bake, or garden
  • Administrative office support
  • Make phone calls
  • Attend community events

Our agencies offer veteran-to-veteran opportunities and participate in the national We Honor Veterans programs.

Volunteer Training:

Volunteering takes no advanced medical training or great commitment. We support our volunteers and appreciate the important role they play in hospice care. We prepare volunteers with specific training including:

  • The hospice care team and the volunteer role
  • The hospice philosophy and end-of-life care
  • Grief and bereavement education
  • Emotional and spiritual support in hospice care
  • Communication and stress management
  • Patient privacy and other regulations

Medicare requires that a hospice provide at least 5 percent of its services through Volunteers. Our volunteer coordinators will help you discover the best fit for you based on your time, skills, and interests.

We are looking for compassionate people to be hospice volunteers and visit our patients for companionship and socialization. Our volunteers are specially trained and continuously supported. Just an hour a week or a couple hours once or twice a month can make a huge difference for someone facing a life-limiting illness. You can make someone's day with only your smile and time.

The Meals on Wheels San Antonio Friendly Visitor Program is a volunteer-based program where the goal is to provide companionship and a meaningful friendship to a homebound citizen in Bexar County. Friendly Visitors are matched with a homebound senior based on similar interests, availability, and gender preference. Friendly Visitor volunteers can visit in-person with a homebound senior and do things such as play games, take a walk, or chat over coffee or tea. The volunteer could also call the client every week to chat about how they are doing. This position is great for individuals who have a heart for helping out others and who would love to spend some free time with a person who needs a Friendly Visitor. Too often, seniors who are no longer able to leave their homes can start to feel isolated, lonely and depressed, which may worsen existing health conditions.

Friendly Visitor volunteers help to alleviate concerns by visiting a homebound senior to provide much needed companionship. Just a simple conversation can make all the difference to lonely person.

Volunteers interested in becoming a Friendly Visitor must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Pass a criminal and sex offender background check
  • Complete a one-hour training/orientation
  • Be a little flexible to care recipients' need for quality time
  • Be able to relate in a positive and warm manner to older adults

Friendly Visitor volunteers are matched with older adults based on personality and interest, so that a bond can easily be developed. Once paired, volunteers are expected to provide friendship and conversation. In some cases, Friendly Visitors offer minor assistance where appropriate (e.g. walks in the neighborhood, computer assistance, etc.).

For more information about receiving services, or to volunteer, please contact Friendly Volunteer Coordinator, Jillian Huskin by email or call 210-735-5115.

Any Meals on Wheels client who is in need of companionship services, may be suffering from depression, or has experienced the loss of a loved one, may be eligible for service.
