San Antonio Community Resource Directory

Communities In Schools programs surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Our evidence-based approach, adapted to meet each community’s unique needs, is the basis for our success.

Basic Needs: A student cannot focus in the classroom if he or she is hungry, cold or tired, or cannot see the board. Site coordinators see to it that students' basic needs are met each day.

Enrichment: Our Site coordinators enroll students in a wide variety of after-school and summer programs, field trips and youth conferences to help them gain experience that is essential to meeting college and career goals.

Academic Assistance: Our site coordinators work hard to ensure that students have the resources to progress academically. From providing students with tutors to finding and creating quiet spaces where students can study, we do whatever it takes to create an optimal learning environment for our students.

Life Skills: Through one-on-one workshops, team building, and guest speakers, we work with students to develop social-emotional learning, character education, social skills building, and conflict resolution.

Behavioral Interventions: Many of our students face and overcome difficult obstacles in their lives. However, their survival skills aren’t always effective in the classroom or in the workplace. Our program teaches students positive ways to cope with anger, conflict resolution, and other strategies to keep them focused on school.

Family Engagement: Site coordinators connect families with counselors and social workers to make sure that home is a healthy, nurturing environment where a student can feel safe.

Couples Counseling:

Every couple has highs and lows in their relationship. That loving communication, appreciation, and understanding are more easily described than carried-out in real life. When couples find themselves off-track, it does not mean the relationship is over. It often means that the couple just needs a little help. When trust has been lost, partners may be able to rebuild it. When couples are pulling in different direction, they can re-evaluate their priorities. When intimacy has been lost, that spark can be reignited. Couples therapy is not a magic formula to save a relationship, but it often helps. Skilled therapists can often turn challenges into opportunities for partners to grow closer to each other.

That is why Thriveworks San Antonio offers couples therapy. Many partners who want a better relationship do not always know how to improve their connection. Our therapists have helped many couples learn how to improve their relationship.

Family Therapy:

Whether or not you and your family need to see a therapist depends on your situation and personal opinions-it's a consensus you’ll need to reach together. However, it may be helpful to keep in mind that there are several indications of negative family dynamics that you can watch out for, including:

  • Undiagnosed mental health conditions or disorders
  • Alcohol or drug addiction
  • Physical or verbal abuse
  • Feelings of resentment or hostility
  • Unruly behavioral issues in children or teens
  • Persistent anxiety over financial issues or relationship difficulties

Community Counselors help people who are uninsured, whose existing coverage does not provide mental health services benefits, are low-income and lack the money to pay for counseling services, or who would not receive treatment any other way. Counseling services are provided by trained, licensed professional counselors, licensed clinical social workers, and licensed marriage and family counselors. Sessions are private and conducted in a safe and familiar environment such as churches and community centers.

The first meeting with a counselor is free. A modest fee based on a sliding fee scale is collected for each follow-up session; however, no one is denied service because they cannot pay.

An appointment must be scheduled in advance.

Here’s how Safe Place works:

Step One – A young person enters a Safe Place and asks for help.

Step Two – The site employee finds a comfortable place for the youth to wait while they call the licensed Safe Place agency. For the greater San Antonio area that is Roy Maas Youth Alternatives (RMYA).

Step Three – An RMYA staff member will talk with the youth to get more information and explain that an SAPD officer can escort them to the RMYA Bridge Emergency shelter.  If the child is agreeable, the RMYA staff will contact SAPD to transport the youth to the shelter.

Step Four – Once at the Bridge, direct-care staff and counselors meet with the youth and provide support. Agency staff ensures the youth and their families receive the help and professional services they need.

This program is for youth under the age of 18 in need of immediate help and safety.

If you’ve been feeling hopeless or lost lately, or struggling with a problem that feels unsurmountable, individual therapy could help you improve your everyday life. Individual therapy helps you win against whatever you’re battling by putting a real expert in your corner through a professional therapist.

Individual therapy is helpful for so many people because it’s the best way to get truly customized therapy. Group therapy may have its own set of numerous advantages. Still, if you want more control over the pacing of your therapy, the methods used, the amount of analysis or feedback you can receive, and the timing of your sessions, you owe it to yourself to look into individual therapy.

If you’re looking for help improving your everyday life – or for a more tailored therapy experience - you would be a great fit for our therapy services. Please reach out to me today for an assessment for individual therapy or to schedule your first appointment.

This program is for students at Coby Glass Elementary School.
