Physical distance can make us feel isolated. CBF now offers a bi-weekly opportunity for you to connect with your CBF family through a video program called CBF Gathering. A caregiver provides assistance in meeting the daily needs of another person.

Many people may find themselves caring for a family member or friend in some way or another, which can be rewarding but stressful.

Circles In Da Hood is a folklife-centered Participatory Action Research Project facilitated by Laura Ramirez, Kimiya Factory, and Madelein Santibanez. Circles build the capacity for young leaders to develop a healing justice analysis and embody the radical love needed to create and sustain collective wellness spaces in their homes and communities. This project occurs in occupied Somi S’ek territories, known as San Antonio, Texas. 

In a city with systemic over-policing that disproportionately impacts youth of color, Circles In Da Hood reimagines how social relationships are woven into the fabric of our community to create alternative patterns of accountability and care. 

Circles are rooted in the wisdom of nature and indigenous human experience, with no beginning or end. Circles create a space for people to contribute the wisdom of their life experiences and listen, learn, grow, and heal within a shared, brave space. Documenting our process was a key aspect of our project. It’s what folklife is all about.

We believe that some people in the community you serve may be unable to make the changes necessary to support their health, despite obesity or complications related to unhealthy eating or inappropriate weight. Many of us with this problem have found help in Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous (FA). We hope you and those you work with will find information about FA™ useful.

What is FA?™
FA™ is a program based on the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. We offer help and spiritually-based recovery to those whose connection with food can be understood as a form of addiction. We are not a medical group, nor are we connected with any particular form of religion. We charge no dues or fees and our meetings include no weigh-ins. Our membership is international and includes men and women, adolescents, and the elderly. All are welcome.

Who might benefit from FA™?
People who find help in FA™ vary greatly. Some of us have been diagnosed as morbidly obese, while others are undereaters. Among us are those who were severely bulimic, who have harmed themselves with compulsive exercise, or whose quality of life was impaired by constant obsession with food or weight. We tend to be people who, in the long term, have failed at every solution we tried, including therapy, support groups, diets, fasting, exercise, and in-patient treatment programs.

Does FA™ work?
Like Alcoholics Anonymous, FA treats food addiction as a threefold illness: physical, mental, and spiritual.  Members have maintained continuous recovery (including stable weight and freedom from obsession with food and body size) for years and even decades. Along with improvements in physical health, FA recovery has brought us better relationships, increased self-esteem, more tools for handling stress, and an ever-deepening spirituality.

Not just for “new” meditators, instruction is also recommended as part of our ongoing practice. You are always welcome to come in and speak to an instructor about your regular practice, and you may even ask to form a working relationship with the instructor of your choice.

Depending on a student’s interest and experience, meditation instruction might include:

• Introducing the practice of meditation – Introductory meditation instruction presents the basic meditation techniques taught in the Shambhala community. 
• Clarifying the view of meditation – In our tradition, meditation instruction involves more than the communication of a technique; it is, at heart, about the transmission of the revolutionary view that unconditional wisdom and compassion are the very ground of our being, and that by learning to relax more and more fully, we allow this fundamental nature to flower. 
• Instruction on working with obstacles to meditation – Common obstacles to meditation include disheartenment, resistance, procrastination, discursiveness, and spacing out. The obstacles are well documented in the Shambhala Buddhist teachings—and so are their antidotes. 
• Guidance on the path of practice and study – Shambhala presents many opportunities for students to deepen their practice and study—public meditation sessions, weeknight classes, weekend programs, retreats, and seminaries, to name a few. A meditation instructor can help you decide what to do next and when to do it. 
• Guidance on joining meditation and daily life – The workaday world is where the rubber meets the road. Getting the tools to meet life’s ups and downs with a strong and pliable mind and an open heart is another potential benefit of working with a meditation instructor.

Spiritual Direction is described in many ways: mentoring, sacred companioning, holy listening, or soul friend.

I welcome clients from all (or no) faith backgrounds and wish only to help you be you. I have a Christian background and tend to use the words God or Holy Spirit to refer to that Being which is greater than, beyond, and within us. But I am open and welcome you and your beliefs as they are. You only need to have a desire for and an openness to the spiritual direction process. As a director, I am not directing your process. I am just helping facilitate the space for your spiritual process to occur.

Sessions run for about 55 minutes and the typically once each month. 

We will begin with a short time of silence, or prayer, to help center ourselves and become fully present.

I will mostly listen during our time. If you don’t have anything specific you’d like to talk about, that’s okay. I may direct our time by asking a question or two, or even allowing for some silence - which is just some space for both of us to rest and to listen. 

My rate is $50 per session but full and partial scholarships are available upon request.

Way of Shambhala is an extensive path of training in authentic meditation practices and wisdom teachings for anyone interested in pursuing such training. This program of courses and weekend retreats offers an experiential overview of practices, teachings, contemplative arts, and physical disciplines rooted in the ancient traditions of Shambhala and Vajrayana Buddhism.

The program is open to people of all religious backgrounds or no religious background. It is recommended for new and experienced meditators as well as those looking to enrich their personal spiritual path and social action.

We welcome you to participate to the extent you wish. Sample a course or a weekend retreat—or a number of them—at any time. The full program is described below.

Program Outline:

Way of Shambhala consists of the following elements:

• Everyday Life series—five courses, with five weekly classes in each
• Shambhala Training series—five weekend retreats;
• Rigden: Unconditional Confidence—a weekend retreat
• the Basic Goodness series—three courses, with six weekly classes in each
• Sacred Path series—six weekend retreats

Way of Shambhala also encompasses some one- to two-week retreats and advanced assemblies. For information about those programs, and about how Way of Shambhala fits in the overall Shambhala path, please see The Shambhala Path on Shambhala's central website. 

The courses are interactive, communal, and create a learning environment where the teachings are intimate and relevant. Participants train in meditation and use inquiry, dialogue, and contemplative arts to integrate the teachings.

The weekend retreats are opportunities to deepen meditation practice in a powerful environment that meets the needs of a workweek and family life.

You may start with any series except the Sacred Path. In each series, the courses or weekend retreats are designed to be taken sequentially. For example, Shambhala Training participants progress from Level I to Level V in sequence. The most gradual introduction is to take the Meditation in Everyday Life course first.

Life After Loss is a 6-week program through the Ecumenical Center designed to give a widow an opportunity to focus deeply on her grief and loss.

This is taught by a certified LAL grief facilitator and is a combination of teaching, discussion, and learning activities.

Widows meeting and connecting with other widows is very special and precious. Beauty From Ashes Ministries in New Braunfels, Texas has successfully started the first BFA widow support group implementing the well-developed and faith-based BFA curriculum that was written by a widow. 

Beauty from Ashes Ministries support groups are led by widows that are certified grief specialists and/or are trained in group facilitation and in using the Beauty from Ashes Ministries Support Group Curriculum. 

BFA Curriculum consists of the following meeting structure:
