The Citizens Police Academy is a program sponsored by the New Braunfels Police Department with the following goals:

  • Give citizens a better understanding of the operation and mission of their local Police Department through a unique learning experience.
  • Bring together citizens of New Braunfels who both work and/or live within the city and surrounding areas from all walks of life.
  • Enhance the participant's knowledge of the New Braunfels Police Department and the City of New Braunfels.
  • Promote the active involvement of the participants in a wide range of civic and community affairs.
  • Solicit the exchange of viewpoints and opinions of the participants in an attempt to help the New Braunfels Police Department better service the community.
  • Continue the teaching process after the academy has been completed through members of the Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association.

Curriculum:

The Citizens Police Academy is an eleven-week course of weekly sessions taught by law enforcement personnel, both civilian and officers, covering a variety of topics like:

  • NBPD's Traffic & Patrol Division
  • History of the New Braunfels Police Department
  • Recruitment/Hiring/Training practices
  • NBPD's K-9 Division
  • NBPD's Criminal Investigation Division (CID)
  • NBPD's 9-1-1 Dispatch Center

Requirements: 

  • must be at least 18 years of age;
  • must live or work in the City of New Braunfels;
  • must have no felony convictions.

To ensure the integrity of the class, each applicant is screened using their DPS driving record (as well as national, state, and local criminal history files) before acceptance. This class is free and is limited to 30 students. If necessary, applicants are placed on a waiting list for the next class.

Applications are available here and must be completed and returned to the New Braunfels Police Department. 

Classes are held once a year starting in early January. The class will meet on Tuesday nights from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM for 11 weeks, with graduation in the 12th week.
