Adaptive riding is a recreational activity for individuals with disabilities focused on teaching horsemanship skills, specifically through riding, in ways adapted to meet the needs of the individual. PATH, Intl teach lessons. We have certified Therapeutic Riding Instructors. The benefits of adaptive riding are seen in the lives of our clients in the areas of education, health, leisure, sports, and recreation.

Riding on the back of a horse rhythmically moves the rider’s body in a way that can be compared to a human’s movement. This helps riders with physical disabilities display improvement in muscle strength, balance, and flexibility.

Besides the therapeutic benefits of horseback riding, individuals also enjoy accessible and inclusive recreational opportunities.

Ages: 4+.

Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) sessions at Open TRAIL Ranch (OTR) are completely ground-based (no riding) and can consist of learning to connect with a horse through grooming, leading, lunging, round pen work, and much more. A PATH, Intl, conducts EAL lessons—Equine Specialist in Mental Health Learning.

Our EAL program here at OTR is centered on the concept that by building a working relationship with a horse, any participant can develop essential skills that can translate to all aspects of their daily lives. The building of the relationship is the main focus of our program. Our trained and certified EAL Practitioners facilitate this relationship and assist the participant in recognizing the non-verbal communication that horses use daily.

Horses, being herd animals, react strongly to the body language and behavior of those around them. The horse’s reactivity directly relates to the inputs they are receiving from the participant, acting almost as a living mirror reflecting the emotions and actions of the participant back onto them. This can lead to self-reflection in the participant, which is essential for personal growth.

Occasionally, lessons will consist of work on the horse as determined by the instructor.

Ages: 6+.

Open T.R.A.I.L. Ranch strives to make equine-assisted services affordable and accessible to all who can benefit. One way we do this is through Participant Scholarships.

The resources for Open T.R.A.I.L. Scholarships are limited and depend on available donated funds. We try to provide financial assistance to those participants who cannot afford the fee. However, we request that participants make any possible payments before the end of the session.

Scholarships are awarded based on need and decided by the Open T.R.A.I.L. Scholarship Committee. Financial assistance is given by session, Spring, Summer, or Fall. Applicants must apply for each session to be considered for a scholarship.

With the aid of psychological testing, psychologists have more information available to them to explore possible diagnoses than do general practitioners or psychiatrists. This improves the accuracy of a diagnosis and helps you and your doctors make more informed treatment decisions.

Psychological Testing for Adults and Adolescents:

Psychological testing can help you identify and understand thoughts, feelings, and behaviors you may have that are causing suffering. Testing can:

  • Determine the severity and origin of memory, attention, and concentration difficulties (anxiety, depression, ADHD, substance use, and PTSD can all impact memory and concentration)
  • Identify thoughts and feelings that interfere with social and relationship functioning
  • Identify cognitive strengths and weaknesses

Project Lifesaver is a rapid response program that locates people who wander away from their caregivers due to brain disorders like Alzheimer's Disease, Autism, Down Syndrome, and dementia.

How it works:

Clients enrolled in the program wear a bracelet that contains a battery-operated transmitter which emits a tracking signal. If the client wanders away, the caregiver would notify NBPD and a search team would be deployed. That search includes the use of a mobile receiver that can pick up the signal from the client's transmitter.

Application Requirements:

  • Must live in the New Braunfels city limits.
  • Must have a clinically diagnosed brain disorder.
  • Must have a 24/7 caregiver.
  • Must be able to wear the bracelet at all times.

Please remember that there are a limited number of bracelets available. Those who qualify will be placed on a waiting list until additional bracelets become available. Or you can purchase a bracelet at your own cost and then register that device with NBPD.

Click here to fill out an submit your application online.

The program is free but is limited to the number of transmitters available.  Citizens can also purchase their transmitters directly from Project Lifesaver and then register those devices with NBPD. The transmitters provided by NBPD are the property of the Police Department and must be returned. There will be a $300 charge for transmitters that are lost, damaged, or not returned.

Helping Hands is a pre-vocational day habilitation program that serves higher-functioning adults with special needs who need a place to grow, develop skills, and establish life-long friendships. Helping Hands offers daily tasks and activities to adults who have intellectual and developmental challenges. Together, we serve our church, our community, and one another.

Helping Hands provides opportunities that bring purpose and dignity to youth and adults who have intellectual and developmental challenges. These opportunities encompass spiritual growth, education, fellowship, and service to God and our community.

Each day at Helping Hands is filled with service, fun, and fellowship! Our tasks are geared toward serving others and many of them promote independent living skills. In addition to our tasks and activities, we eat out at area restaurants and go bowling regularly. Physical activity is also a part of our day.

This program is for higher functioning adults with special needs.

This ministry was established to create a support group for cancer survivors and their caregivers.

We have expanded to include all people with serious or chronic illnesses and their caregivers and loved ones. It is a place where we can all come together to be encouraged and inspired as well as to encourage and inspire others.

Many of the people in this parish and our community have had, currently have, or will have to face a diagnosis of a serious illness or disability. We would like to offer encouragement and support to people who face these struggles. You do not have to be Catholic to join this support group; it is a community outreach ministry.

If you are a patient currently undergoing treatment, join us.  We are in constant prayer on your behalf. We offer you encouragement, wisdom and a hand to hold onto. We’ve been in your shoes; we can be a light in the darkness for you.

If you are a survivor, join us. We need your wisdom, compassion and experience to help others. It is said that God can take something bad and turn it into something beautiful. Take your experiences and turn them into something beautiful to give glory to God.

If you are a caregiver or loved one for a patient, join us. We understand having a serious or chronic illness is an arduous journey and the patient does not take that journey alone. We want to encourage and support you as well.
