San Antonio Legal Services Association (SALSA) assists attornies who want to provide pro bono service, including meeting the State Bar of Texas' recommendation that every attorney perform 50 hours of pro bono service a year.

SALSA provides training resources, mentorship, and coverage under SALSA’s Professional Liability policy. Attornies can give back within their area of expertise or take on a limited-service matter in a new area of the law.

Volunteer for a clinic. Provide limited legal advice or assistance at an isolated pro bono event. (This requires limited or no follow-on assistance.)

Participate in a program. Provide limited scope representation in a subject matter area that has ample training resources and mentor oversight.

Take a case. Provide extended representation services in your area of expertise. Check out SALSA’s available cases and express interest in a particular case.

Check out the SALSA Calendar for currently available opportunities.

* Are you an attorney who is licensed and in good standing in another state or has an inactive Texas bar license? Learn more about how you can do pro bono in Texas through the NOVA Program.

Please note that volunteers will be contacted on an as-needed basis to confirm availability for cases as they come into the program.

SALSA offers volunteer opportunities for non-attorney volunteers seeking to give their time to support legal efforts that benefit indigent, vulnerable, and at-risk members of our community.

SALSA works with other non-profits in San Antonio to identify gaps in coverage that are ideal for volunteers to fill.

New Volunteer Opportunities: Spanish translation, Don't Bully Me Project Intake (only for paralegals), Court Monitor Program, etc.

Volunteers are accepted on a rolling basis and must first complete the required trainings and clear a background check prior to volunteering.

If you are a student interested in doing guardianship work as a career, if you are in need of community service hours, or if you are an individual who simply wants to help protect a vulnerable population, we’d love to have you volunteer.

When you volunteer with SALSA, you have all of our resources, trainings, mentors, staff support, and more at your fingertips.

Also look up:  Conviction Integrity Unit

Post-conviction relief is a procedure that allows the defendant in a criminal case to bring more evidence or raise additional issues in a case after a judgment has been made (post-trial). With valid grounds, post-conviction relief can help a convicted individual obtain a fair resolution in their case.

As an independent and autonomous part of the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office, the Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU) conducts objective reviews of final convictions to determine whether some manifest injustice has occurred that may be corrected by the procedures provided by post-conviction law.

Post-conviction relief comes in two forms: equitable relief and legal relief.

Equitable relief may be granted if:

  • the conviction is not contested, but
  • the client presents a compelling and/or sympathetic situation. (Why does this person deserve relief? What is keeping this person from taking their next steps? How has this person changed since the offense (treatment, counseling, etc)? Letters from the community in support of relief are key here.

Legal relief may be granted if:

  • there has been a conviction, and
  • there is a credible legal claim (e.g., My attorney didn’t communicate with me. New evidence or evidence that went untested at the time of my trial shows that I'm innocent, etc.).

When a case is accepted, the CIU prepares an internal proposal/memorandum and presents it to the District Attorney for approval.

Even if a case does not end in an exoneration or an expunction, it can still be beneficial to the applicant.

Also note:

  • The CIU cannot review every case where there is a bare claim of innocence.
  • There is no magic formula; each case is different.
  • The CIU cannot give legal advice to a defendant or a defendant's family members.
  • It would be best to have your claim presented by a lawyer who is experienced in post-conviction criminal work.
  • The Innocence Project of Texas and similar organizations can be extremely helpful in presenting new claims.
  • The more proof that a conviction was wrongful, the more likely we are to review the case. Documents that support that claim are also helpful.
  • When CIU accepts a case for review, it will be open-minded and objective.

Click here to learn more and submit a case for review.

Living Water Faith Church (LWFC) has an opportunity to minister to parolees three times a week and one of their needs is food. Many parolees have very little money and no food. LWFC has partnered with Daily Bread Ministries who provide food free-of-charge. Each week with their own funds, LWFC purchases chicken, beef and pork franks to supplement what they get from food banks. The San Antonio Metro District Parole Office has more than 1,000 parolees who have to report each month and over 40 parolees and their families are receiving food from LWFC.

In addition to parolees, LWFC provides food to the community surrounding the church, where they find the elderly and single mothers who support on average four children who also desperately need food assistance. Pastor Lucio uses this opportunity to minister to them God's message of redemption and hope. Some are now attending LWFC services and have expressed gratitude and a renewed relationship with God.

Living Water Faith Church (LWFC) has been volunteering and providing Christian faith-based support to the men and women who are currently on parole. Since November 2009, LWFC has conducted weekly group counseling at the San Antonio Parole Offices on Guadalupe Street and at the office on N.E. Loop 410.

LWFC teaches from a biblical and spiritual perspective regarding the different areas of their lives. The classes have an impact not only on the parolee, but significant others in the community. The subject matter include authority, attitudes, encouragement, and recognition that there is Hope for each individual who will be still long enough to allow God to help him/her.

Our classes are numbering approximately 25 to 40 men and women. The people who attend the groups are given credit towards their conditions of parole which require them to attend a support group on a weekly basis. We encourage parolees to attend a bible-believing church weekly, accompanied by their family.

Please call us for more information on our support groups for parolees.

Pastor Mooney enjoys telling the story of how he came to Christ and is willing to discuss the Word of God with anyone. Pastor Mooney was ordained as a minister in 1996, devotes his life to the Lord, and welcomes everyone to join the churches activities and services. He strongly believes that “It takes one to know one and show them the way.” Pastor Mooney is a living example that “God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you always have sufficiency in all things, and that you may have an abundance for every good thing” (2 COR 9:8 NKJV).

Our vision is to help the homeless, and those on drugs (crack cocaine, alcohol, downers, uppers, and heroin) and those in gangs. These individuals need a chance to have a job and money to help them start over again with a new life. We see them on our street corners all over the world. We need, as a people, to come together and help feed and clothe these individuals. We, as human beings are complete with body, mind, and spirit.

The Esperanza Court provides transitional residential support to individuals enrolled in the Bexar County Human Trafficking Court. This Bexar County Specialty Court began operating in May 2014 with the aim of interrupting the cycle of prostitution, arrests and addiction that devastates the lives of women and men. Shortly after the court’s inception, Crosspoint agreed to add its proven model of transitional residential services to the court’s resources.

Crosspoint’s Esperanza program provides a safe and secure residential experience for clients. The program is co-located in our Residential Reentry Center where that program’s structure and accountability rules provide clients positive support in their challenging transition. Esperanza clients who lack positive supports in the community need time to establish a stable foundation for independent growth and success. The Crosspoint program provides a safe haven from which Esperanza clients can take time to build their skills and resources as they prepare for a new life.

Crosspoint provides a structured residential environment for individuals referred by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the U.S. Probation Office or U.S. Pretrial Services.

Accountability is the foundation for this service model. Residents are held accountable for their behavior and progress throughout the program while staff is accountable for adhering to procedures that promote public safety. Every resident undergoes assessment and individualized program planning. After a short in-house orientation period the resident receives additional privileges which allow him/her to become further integrated into the community.

Measures of program progress include:

  • obtaining employment
  • development of a realistic budget
  • improving family and community support systems
  • remaining drug and alcohol-free
  • development of a stable residential plan

The Crosspoint experience helps reduce recidivism and the attendant societal and economic costs by utilizing integrated, evidence-based services.

Crosspoint strives to forge the essential alliance between criminal justice supervision, community service providers and other community stakeholders to provide our clients with the resources and guidance necessary to lead productive lives and achieve restoration of citizenship.

Restoration of the individual, the family and the community at large is paramount and Crosspoint allows for individual restoration through community service projects, faith-based services, structured programming and supportive relationship with our staff.
